Adventures in Portraiture
Last summer the Globe dudes made a quick trip through town and I got the chance to shoot a bit with Chris Haslam.
I rented a Hasselblad Macro lens to try and get a good close up portrait, was never happy with the standard 80mm Hasselblad lens especially when shooting head shot style stuff. I always loved the detail and the depth of field you can get with a proper medium format shot.
While I was shooting these I was standing on a plastic chair that managed to break, it was a classy move. First time shooting with Haslam, half laying in a puddle with my arm up trying to save the rented lens, good stuff. ...humbling to say the least.
Also managed to get a photo of him shredding the SBC mini, again another humbling experience watching him skate transition.
At least the photo turned out pretty cool, we ended up using it for his Firsts article which is now online.

Stolen Gear
Good friend and fellow SBC staffer, Owen Woytowich recently got his gear stolen out of a friend's car here in Toronto the other night.
I'm sure not a lot of people other than skate photogs are really going to buy a Hasselblad fisheye, so check the gear below and keep your eyes peeled.
"Somebody went ahead and stole all of my gear on October 6th, 2009 around 8:00 PM in Toronto, ON in front of 65 Clinton St. where we were parked. It was a smash and grab as I had two brand new skateboards in the back seat (DGK Wade DesArmo & Organika Karl Watson) which led the door to them seeing my camera bag which was stashed in the back of the hatch of the vehicle. Here’s what is now missing (my life essentially)"
- Owen Woytowich
*I snapped a few photos from a while back of my bag for you to see roughly what is missing which are below.

Did you know the media once declared Hill "lord o the pipe?"

Bouncin.

Mitch pryma was in rough shape.

Local Windsor legend Jamie jefferey

Street yoga.

Huge handrails.

Sam with a snappy AND prompt kickflip.

Hill repping the daggers.

Hot and ready.

Epic spots.

Not as epic but still sick.

Comedic Coup D’etat
Last spring, with the help of local shredder/funny dude, Nik Sexton got the chance to shoot Rick Mercer, another local funny dude (and shredder?) for an interview in the mag. For those of you unfamiliar with Canadian public broadcasting, here is a bit of info.
For whatever reason, I thought it would be cool to rent one of those artsy Nikon tilt/shift lenses and go straight from renting that to meeting Mercer on set. The lens is a bit tricky and doesn't have an auto focus feature. Luckily a few of the shots turned out half decent and he was a good sport.
Anyways, the full interview is now up for your reading pleasure and below are are few of the photos.

Sussed out
The "sus Monts" vid has finally dropped. Here are a few photos from the Toronto premiere. The new change skateboards vid also dropped.

Cephas wears it well

Men of the hour. Sherman and Lee show off their hard work. Now go to your local shop and buy the vid!

Nathan had a few refreshments.

Quick getting ready to show off his baby. Good work quick!

Shubat and Pat get their lurk on.

Media moguls.

Northern Exposure

There is a contest for budding skateboard photographers to get their stuff in the photo annual and win a bunch of gear. It's judged by Jody Morris, should be sick. Check it out here.

Holy crap, it's almost August already... Here are some odds and ends from the summer so far.

Did you see Lee Yankou's interview? Must be the grip.

Geoff Stock!
Montreal photographer Geoff Clifford had all his gear stolen from his place not long ago. Flashes, digital gear and even a Hasselblad set up with a fisheye, sucks.
If you are in Montreal, swing by Geoff Stock and buy some cheap prints or make a donation to help a fellow photographer out!

Wheelies, etc
A few randoms from the past little bit. I'm making an effort to break the digi cam out a bit more.
Blaxall shredding that long ledge in Stoney Creek. It's skateable again... sort of.

Pre-Facebook
Saw Mortal on the weekend and for whatever reason he was going through his wallet which he has had since high school. He found some old photos of girls he knew that he still had in there. He seemed pretty stoked on them.

Hendrik Herzmann Interview
Got another little 'interview' with a photographer this week.
I got a chance to hit up Herdrik Hermann (aka Henne) a German photographer who's stuff I've been stoked on ever since I started nerding out on photography online.
Enjoy the photo with a few words to go along with it.
Check here for the PDF.

Southern Discomfort
One broken Van, a broken video camera and chipped fisheye and one crew member flying home early with an injury— despite that, we made it out in once piece on another trip to Atlanta.

Caught up with our homie from last year, Andrew to show us around on the last day.
First stop, Home Depot park.

Some local kids were stoked we were skating across from their house, they came by to get in on the session. Check the Toronto hat.

Southern Comfort
Shredding in ATL right now. Had a patch of rough weather at the start but now it's blue skies. Here some randoms from the journey so far.

Spring Break
Geeze, almost a month since the last update— sorry.
I'm in Atlanta with some dudes, photos from here in a minute, but for now I just want to draw attention to the new SBC cover shot by Scott Pommier that should be hitting shops/your hands in the coming days.
I've never seen a switch hurricane, but if anyone is going to do it, it's going to be one of the Decenzos....

Glencoe Gets Carded
Saw this clip on Elliott's blog the other day of Glencoe eating shit on the Cardiel Hubba in SF.
Kind of forgot about it, but that hubba is in a pretty sketchy park (you cant tell by the dude in the clip). The ledge is pretty perfect, I think it just got de-capped (there was a pole in the landing or something?) by rollerbladers when we were there.
Glencoe was getting really close to this switch noseslide when he did that harsh slam into the bush, his back was all cut up from the shrubs and stuff, it wasn't nice.
We went back the next day to meet up and Glencoe was checking out the bushes he just slammed into and saw a nice handful of syringes, some broken, some cracked just laying there in the bushes. By the look on his face when he saw the vile stuff he slammed into you could tell he was a little stressed. Pat an I tried to assure him he is alright, even though we both knew he just basically did a backwards Crodile Mile into into a biohazard.
I guess he never contracted anything that day as he's still alive and rolling.

I do feel a little bad when I hear me and Pat heckling him on the clip though.

Weekend Shift
Finally broke down to Brooks Reynolds prodding and rented one of those Tilt-Shift lenses that are so-hot-right now and I have to say it was pretty fun to play around with, maybe not worth the hefty price tag to buy though right now.
Heavy metal
Dave Christian got artsy while stuck in traffic.
Got a chance to swing by The Mercer Report thanks to Nik Sexton

Party like it's 1939
Toronto staple, Honest Ed's is having a sale where they set prices back to how they were in the 30's for a bunch of items. Go see if you can find some deals on 5 panels hats or tees.Check the article here.
Pretty weird seeing milk and stuff for 25 cents.

Digging through some old CDs of photos at the office and came across this one of Jonathan Condren from Tampa Am 2000 (?) shot by Ryan Allan. It was too good not to post up.

Allen Ying Interview
Took a bit of time and finally did something I was meaning to do— interviewed a photographer I was stoked on. Hopefully it'll be the first of several.
Allen Ying is a talented skate photographer from New York and will probably be the first to call himself a photo nerd— his relentless pursuit of technical perfection is definitely humbling. That's why I thought it would be rad to talk with him. Heads up, it can get pretty heavy on the photo jargon, but there's some sick photos from him to keep you interested.
